In honour of the Iron Lady of Manipur – Irom Sharmila Chanu, who is on a continuous hunger strike for last 12 years, to demand that the Indian government repeal the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA). The annual Irom Sharmila Scholarship has been set up this year going forward.
Sociology Professor Nandini Sundar of Delhi University informed Sevendiary.com, “The jury consists of Dr. Bimol Akoijam at JNU, Dr. Kamei Aphun and myself. We are also expecting to be joined by a Kashmiri jury member”.
The scholarship amount of Rs 50,000, will be awarded once a year.
Any post-graduate student studying in any university or college in Delhi in any subject who comes from an area with internal armed conflict. Preference will be given to those who come from AFSPA affected areas, have suffered under AFSPA or similar laws or can demonstrate financial need.
For now, the scholarship is limited only to students studying in Delhi, as it will easier for the jury to verify the genuineness of the applications received.
