Manipuri boy wins gold at 2015 Swiss Junior Open in Geneva

The state of Manipur, which has over the years produced many talents, has added another feather to its cap through 14-year-old Maisnam Meiraba Luwang, who has created history by becoming the first Northeastern badminton player to win Swiss Junior Open (Under 15) held in Geneva, Switzerland on Sunday.

A budding player from Sega Road Khwairakpam Leikai in Imphal, defeated Rory Easton of England 21-17, 21-17 to win U-15 Men’s singles title Swiss Junior Open 2015. In the U-15 doubles final, Meiraba and his partner Rafael Gavois of France clinched the second runners-up title as they were defeated by England pair William Jones and James Penver 17-21, 9-21.

Born to Meisnam Ramesh Luwang and Ratna Ongbi Ratna Devi, Meiraba is the only international badminton player from his state. He had earlier won two championship medals in both Single and Double events at the AROS CUP Youth International Badminton Tournament” 2014 in Denmark.

He also won a gold medal at the “59th School National Badminton Championship, India” that was held at Agra in Uttar Pradesh. Meiraba has bagged 17 medals in Under 13 and Under 15 age categories so far.

Manipur shuttler is the youngest recipient of the Olympic Gold Quest scholarship 2013 -2014 from the Northeast in his age category.
