Meghalaya runner survives Boston blasts

Architect Gerald Pde, who is also an amateur runner hailing from Shillong (Meghalaya), was one of the thousands of participants who took part in the ill-fated Boston Marathon on Monday afternoon, which killed three people, including an 8-year-old child, and injuring more than 140 people.

According to a report made by The Shillong Times, Gerald Pde had already completed the race before the twin blasts occurred and escaped unhurt.

The 39-year-old has participated in several marathons and half marathons. One of his personal goals for this year’s Boston race was to help raise funds to sponsor underprivileged runners from Meghalaya to take part in the Delhi Half Marathon in September this year.

Here’s his personal pledge message posting on;

“Hi guys, I am Gerald and I am running the Boston marathon on the 15th April. I am an avid marathon runner but this time I am running for a special cause. Over the past year while training for Boston 2013 and other marathons, I have witnessed the immense talent in young runners in Meghalaya. I got inspired from watching a teenage runner from an interior village in Meghalaya finish a 10K under 37 minutes, and that too with borrowed shoes as he didn’t own any.These runners have very little resources to get formal training and register for big marathons in India. Seeing their immense potential, I felt I could use this event to Run for a Cause, the cause being raising funds for taking 10 of these marginalized runners from Meghalaya to the Airtel Delhi Marathon in September 2013. I will use the funds for their formal training, registration and their accommodation in Delhi. For most of them it will be their first trip out of their home state and would serve as tremendous exposure. Some of these runners can run a half marathon within an hour and 15 fifteen minutes and I am sure could do better with proper training and exposure. So please come forward and help me in this endeavor. Thank you!”

Gerald Pde is one of the organizers for Shillong  Half Marathon. He had studied master’s in Environmental Design at Arizona State University and has also worked in New York for nearly 6 years as an Environmental Designer before returning back to his native place – Shillong in 2008.
