The first private university in the Northeastern region was Sikkim-Manipal University (SMU) in Gangtok, Sikkim. It was established in 1995, as a joint venture university with the local state government, with the state contributing land and Rs.30 crores for the establishment of a medical college.
Sikkim Manipal University is also the first government and private joint-educational initiative in India and is recognized by University Grant Commission (UGC) and approved by Government of India.

- Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT)

- College of Physiotherapy
- School of Basic & Applied Sciences
