Sikkimese woman who captained the U.S. Army

Former Sikkimese Chief Minister Narbahadur Bhandari’s daughter Perilla Bhandari Swartz didn’t follow her father’s footsteps but instead chose a different career. She is possibly the only NRI woman who holds captain rank in the US Army.

She has seen action in three combat zones, including Iraq, and has a number of awards under her belt like Soldier of the Year (2004), Logistics Warrior and Military Leadership Award.

In another interesting news, a young Manipuri soldier serving as Lieutenant in the British Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service (RMAS), Special Forces, is in line for a Prestigious British Gallantry Award to be bestowed on 19th June for his bravery as lead scout in Afghanistan in 2011.

Lt Khwairakpam Robin Singh will receive the ‘Conspicuous Gallantry Cross’,  a second level military decoration of the United Kingdom armed forces, with six other personnel.
