The ten day Manipur Sangai Festival 2012 begins

The ten day Manipur Sangai festival 2012 has been inaugurated by State Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam at BOAT, Palace Compound in Imphal on Wednesday afternoon.

The opening day of the annual festival saw a colourful audio visual performance based on the festival theme song depicting the beauty and cultural unity of Manipur, which was followed by mesmerizing fireworks display later in the evening at Hapta Kangjeibung, the main festival venue which is well adorned by colourful flags, innovative alluring artwork and decorative items. The tourism department is expecting footfalls of over 5 lakhs people to visit during the ongoing festival held from 21-30 November.

In 2010, The state “Tourism Festival” was renamed to “Manipur Sangai Festival,” as a tribute to showcase the uniqueness of the gentle and endangered Brow-Antlered Deer popularly known as the Sangai Deer which is found only in Manipur at the floating Keibul Lamjao National Park in Loktak Lake and to get Manipur on the tourism map.
