Zomi National day celebrated in Imphal

The 64th Zomi National Day (Zomi Nam Ni) was celebrated today at Bheigyachandra Open Air Theatre (BOAT), Imphal with the presence of a large number of Zomi people from Mizoram and Manipur.

Manipur chief minister Ibobi Singh graced the colorful event as chief guest and said, although there were mistakes and misunderstandings amongst different communities in the past in the state, it is time to forget all those and march forward together to bring development and it is the responsibility of the people of the State to safeguard and promote the rich culture and tradition left behind by the forefathers.

Mami Varte performs at the festival

Pop diva from Mizoram, Mami Varte, acclaimed Tangkhul folk singer Guru Rewben Mashangwa and different cultural troupes enthralled the 5000 plus crowd with their mesmerising presentations.

Zomi community has been observing Zomi National Day to mark remembrance of the historic Zomi Convention, Zomi Nam Ni is celebrated on the 20th day of February every year since 1948 in different countries. The Day is observed as a day of deliverance, love, peace, unity, political retrospection and remembrance of the history of the Zomi. The first Zomi Convention is held at Falam in Myanmar on February 20, 1948.
